Writing
When children leave Cuddington, we hope that they will be enthused, confident writers who:
- can discuss and evaluate how authors use language, including figurative language, considering the impact on the reader
- are able to write for a range of audiences and purposes using accurate grammatical features and a wide range of ambitious and effective vocabulary which draws on what they have read as models.
- have a passion for writing, encouraging them to wish to write in their own time
- understand the purpose of drafting, editing and publishing a piece of writing
Writing Curriculum Progression
Key Text Overview
The Talk for Writing Approach
The Talk for Writing approach enables children to read and write independently for a variety of audiences and purposes within different subjects. A key feature is that children internalise the language structures needed to write through ‘talking the text’, as well as close reading. The approach moves from dependence towards independence, with the teacher using shared and guided teaching to develop the ability in children to write creatively and powerfully.
This document provides further information about the Talk for Writing process and how each teaching stage is used to inspire and support the children's development for writing. While the National Curriculum objectives for English underpin all of our teaching and learning, Talk for Writing is our engaging vehicle which takes our children on an inspiring journey, to learn and retain new curriculum content in a meaning and purposeful way.
Spelling
No Nonsense Spelling
We use the No Nonsense Spelling programme to teach the spelling requirements of the National Curriculum explicitly. Through this programme, children are taught strategies to use to spell words at the point of writing, strategies to use to learn spellings and strategies to use for editing and proofreading their writing. Within English units, children apply the spelling rules and strategies that have been taught explicitly, so the learning of words from the curriculum is linked directly to children’s writing.
