Art and Design
Purpose of Study
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Aims
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
The Art Curriculum at Cuddington
Cuddington Community will “Bring out the Best” in our pupils by providing a language rich and diverse experience both within and beyond the classroom. Our flexible approach enables everyone to thrive personally and academically, overcome challenges and prepare them for lifelong learning.
This is reflected in our curriculum approach to learning Art, using the aims set out in Development Matters (2021) and the National Curriculum (2014) as frameworks for how we map content, ensure progression in knowledge and sequence our units of work.
Intent, Implementation, Impact
It is our goal at Cuddington Community Primary School to deliver a high-quality art education that builds an awareness of the impact of art on our lives. It encourages pupils to become resourceful, creative individuals who will have the skills to contribute to artistic life in their community. We place great emphasis on the appropriate knowledge, skills and subject-specific vocabulary so that children will be successful and ready for the next stage of their education and into their future lives. Our overall aim is that the children will have developed the skill sets and artistic experiences needed to fuel their imagination and allow them to flourish as artists.
Cuddington Community Primary School uses the Kapow Curriculum and their high-quality resources from the scheme of work in EYFS, KS1 and KS2 in lessons for art and have developed a comprehensive curriculum that meet the needs of our Cuddington children. It outlines the three main stages of the design process: design, make and evaluate, and supports teaching, learning and assessment.
In addition to the timetabled lessons, Cuddington proudly incorporates art themed days into the curriculum allowing pupils to showcase and hone their skills whilst developing their independence and creativity.
